US strikes al-Qaeda leader in Syria

The US is “fully confident” that Abu Hamza al-Yemeni was killed in the drone strike, a US official with knowledge of the operation told CNN. Al-Yemeni was riding alone on a motorcycle in the Idlib Providence in northwestern Syria when he was wounded, Central Command said, and an initial review of the strike shows there were no civilian casualties.

According to the official, there was no need to notify Russians using the deconflict line over Syria.

Two weeks ago, the US-led coalition arrested a senior ISIS leader in Aleppo in northern Syria, east of Monday’s strike. The US identified the detainee as Hani Ahmed al-Kurdi, an accomplished bomb maker who became one of the top leaders of ISIS in Syria. The US said he was “in charge of coordinating terrorist activities in the region”.
