The “coolest” streets in the world for 2022

(CNN) — When it comes to fashion, street style is as important as runway style – in fact, there are dozens of blogs and Instagram accounts dedicated to chronicling the best streetwear looks.

That’s because urban chic has always started on the street, where people from all classes and walks of life can mingle with each other on their way to work, school, home, and entertainment venues.

This year, Time Out — the media and hospitality brand that publishes local guides to some of the world’s most exciting cities — released its second annual review. the coolest streets in the world.

The culture of the city can be determined not only by the district, but also by the street.

“In most parts of the world, pre-pandemic life has returned with a bang. People are enthusiastically making plans and heading back to their cities and vacations,” James Manning, Time Out travel editor, said in a statement. “Our list of the world’s steepest streets includes the main thoroughfares that knowledgeable locals, including our seasoned editors and writers, are recommending to take a stroll right now.”

This year there are 33 streets on the list, three more than in the first review in 2021. It also includes several new cities including Taipei, Mumbai, Athens and Accra.

The leader of the list this year was Wellington Street in Montreal’s Verdun district.

Time Out Canada editor Laura Osborne says the street has “killer cocktail bars, stellar brunch bars, some of the best sandwich bars in town, and even a sandy city beach” plus it will be pedestrianized in 2023, which will no doubt add more steepness. points.

“We know that this main street, also known as the Wellington Promenade, has been reimagined in original and creative ways for many years, and it’s great to see Verdun continue to shine.” — Yves Laloumière, President and CEO of Tourisme Montreal. , told CNN Travel.

While the United States didn’t take the top spot, America can rest assured knowing that it has the highest number of streets on the list – Miami’s Calle Ocho, New York’s MacDougal Street (home to perennial favorites cocktail bar Dante) and Wentworth Avenue in Chicago.

Mexico’s representative on the list is Avenida Amsterdam in the trendy Condesa district of Mexico City.

Five of the top 10 streets are in this region.

Melbourne, Australia topped the 2021 list from Smith Street but dropped to second position this year. City Street Gertrude made the list, with Eliza Campbell of Time Out Australia describing it as “beautiful, unassuming and devoid of the raucous nightlife of its comparatively noisy siblings”.

In seventh place is Tai Ping Shan, a district within a district on the main island of Hong Kong.

CNN digital producer Rhea Mogul, who lives on the street, says the best things about living there are dog-friendly cafes and “a great mix of old and new.” Tai Ping means “peace and stability” in Cantonese and Shan means “hill”.

Taipei’s Yongkang Street, home to beloved craft beer maker Zhang Men Brewing, will make a splashy debut for 2022.

“We have brought together various resources to promote the area to foreign tourists, and we are very pleased to have it on the list,” Huang Shi-fan, director of international relations at the Taiwan Tourism Board, told CNN. “We hope to bring tourists back to the area once the border opens.”

Time Out, headquartered in London, looked almost at home for some of its picks this year. The UK’s capital’s coolest street in 2022 is Deptford High Street, a mix of street stalls, markets, shops, bars and more that, according to Time Out editor Chris Wavell, is not just London’s steepest street, but “the most lively.”

Further north, Glasgow’s Great Western Road is the highest entrance to the UK, ranking third.

And Denmark’s capital, Copenhagen, which CNN Travel called “the new European capital of coollast year, ranked fifth. Wernedamsvei was dubbed “mini Paris” by the editors of Time Out because of the wine and cheese shops and plenty of fresh flowers. It must be a pain for a Paris that doesn’t really make the list.

Other European streets receiving recognition on the 2022 list are Kolokotroni in Athens, Calle Echegaray in Madrid and Capel Street in Dublin.

Of the last of the three, Dublin travel writer Nicola Brady says that Capel, rhyming with maple, “seems like a real piece of old Dublin.”

She adds that the street, which became pedestrian earlier this year, has “small hardware stores and pubs that have been around for decades, along with newer Korean and Vietnamese restaurants.”
