Spain reports first death from monkeypox in Europe

Earlier Friday, Brazil reported the first death from monkeypox outside the African continent in the current wave of the disease.

According to a July 22 report from the World Health Organization, just five deaths have been recorded worldwide, all in the African region.

Last Saturday, the WHO declared the rapidly spreading outbreak a global health emergency, the highest level of concern.

In its latest report, the Spanish Ministry of Health said there were 4,298 confirmed cases in the country. Of the 3,750 patients he had information about, 120 were hospitalized and one died, but no further details were provided.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Health declined to provide details about the deceased.
