Rihanna’s giant boots are made for stomping

Showcasing the good, the bad and the ugly, “Look of the Week” is a regular series dedicated to unpacking the most talked about outfits of the past seven days.

Rihanna reminded fans of her border-pushing style this week. The talented star, who has only been seen in public a handful of times since giving birth in May, stepped out in New York on Saturday wearing oversized boots.

While her RZA tee, sunglasses and snakeskin print bag were already made for a casual yet chic outfit, Rihanna took things to the next level with a pair of giant slouchy boots that touched the hem of her denim miniskirt.

The look suggests the performer is still keeping a close eye on runway trends: her oversized shoes appear to have been taken straight from French label Y/Project’s recent Spring/Summer 2023 collection, which featured a pair of similar black denim shoes made in style head to toe denim look.

Rihanna isn’t the first celebrity to rock showy thigh-high boots this year (although she may have brought the most drama). Earlier this month, singer Dua Lipa wore a mens-style button-down mini dress with snow-white trousers. Boots Bottega Veneta. The craftsmanship of the Italian label’s signature “intrecciato” leather weave gave the boots a chunkier look than past models, though they were still understated by comparison.
This week Kim Kardashian posted sad video on instagram yourself in a dark gym in lowered boots to the thigh. The reality star completed her seemingly impractical workout look by donning a nude bikini top and a white short-sleeve top as she posed on various machines.

Similar styles are also appearing on the runways, with several designers resurrecting over-the-knee boots as part of bulkier silhouettes. For Fall/Winter 2022, high-top riding boots from Acne Studios brought poignant drama to Paris Fashion Week, and Isabelle Marant sent a whole bunch of high-thigh, sagging models onto the runway (though they were noticeably slimmer than Rihanna).

Elsewhere, Vivienne Westwood created sculpted teal and white versions, Chanel pushed the boat forward with a pair of rugged thigh-high wellies, and Vetements created a pair of bold, gender-neutral buckle boots.

It remains to be seen if Rihanna’s giant take on the trend will go mainstream. After all, there are things only RiRi can do.
