Iraqi protesters storm into Baghdad’s green zone, denouncing new prime minister’s nomination

Al-Sudani was officially nominated on Monday by the Coordination Framework, the largest Shiite alliance in the Iraqi parliament, nine months after the election.

Iraqi security forces used tear gas and water cannons to disperse the protesters in an attempt to push them out of the Green Zone.

The outgoing government of Prime Minister Mustafa al-Qadhimi issued a statement calling on the protesters to “leave the Green Zone immediately”, preserve public and private property, and follow the instructions of the security forces.

“The security forces will be committed to protecting state institutions and international missions, as well as preventing any breach of security and order,” al-Qadimi added.
