Fire at petrochemical complex in Shanghai kills at least one person

The fire broke out at the ethylene glycol plant of the Sinopec petrochemical complex at about 4 a.m. in Jinshan City, the company said on its official Weibo account.

Rescue teams were sent to the scene from Jinshan and Fengxian districts, as well as from the city’s Chemical Industrial Park, according to the Shanghai Fire Department. Rescue work continues, ”the message says.

As of 9 am local time, the company said the fire was under control.

In a video posted by Shanghai residents on social media and viewed by CNN, at least one explosion occurred at a petrochemical plant as the fire raged.

In recent years, China has experienced a spate of industrial accidents that have killed dozens of people, raising public safety concerns.

In 2015, at least 173 people were killed in a series of explosions at a chemical warehouse in the northern port city of Tianjin.
Last October, at least three people died and more than 30 were injured in a massive explosion at a restaurant in the northeastern city of Shenyang. The gas explosion occurred in a mixed residential and commercial building.
