England won their first ever major women’s championship in dramatic fashion by beating Germany 2-1 after extra time in the Euro 2022 final.

The win was watched by 87,192 spectators at Wembley Stadium, a record attendance for a European Championship final for both men and women.

England’s Ella Thun opened the scoring midway through the second half with a deft shot before Lina Magull, who equalized, went into extra time.

Ten minutes before the penalty shoot-out, Chloe Kelly threw the ball over the line at close range and scored the winning goal to avenge Germany’s 6-2 defeat in the 2009 final in Finland.
