Britney Griner: Sherel Griner talks about her emotional turmoil after his wife was detained in Russia

Earlier this month, a Russian court extended the WNBA star and two-time Olympian Griner’s pre-trial detention until at least June after her arrest in February.

According to Russian authorities, Griner had cannabis oil in her luggage and was charged with smuggling large amounts of drugs, an offense punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

“I am numb. I couldn’t move and then I said, “You need to get up now,” Sherel Griner told ABC’s Good Morning America of the moment she learned of her wife’s arrest.

Griner added that she communicates with her wife “sporadically, here and there” through letters and “absolutely” wants to talk about the situation with US President Joe Biden.

“I hear all the time that he has power,” Griner said. “She’s a political pawn, so if they keep her because they want you [Biden] do something, I want you to do it.”

Three weeks ago, the State Department classified Griner as wrongful detention in Russia.

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken has previously said that the State Department is working on the case day and night and that Cherell Griner should not hesitate to contact her if she does not understand something.

However, Griner said she did not know if her wife was a priority, as described by Blinken.

“I don’t know,” she said. “He said she was the top priority, but I want to see it. It seems to me that I will see BJ in the United States. At the moment, I don’t even know who I’ll get when she returns.” .”
