Blake Lively paid homage to New York City architecture in a shimmering dress that gave a dramatic makeover as she walked the Met Gala red carpet on Monday night.

Lively and her husband Ryan Reynolds are co-hosts of the event, and while Reynolds wore a more classic Ralph Lauren tuxedo for the Gilded Glamor and White Tie theme, Lively was stunned in a bespoke Versace gown inspired by Art Deco design and detailing. of New York’s most famous landmarks.

The evening dress code was inspired by the Gilded Age, a 30-year period in the late 19th century when the wealth of US industrial families skyrocketed and the New York elite rose in fashion.

When Lively first arrived, a sparkly beaded Versace gown was wrapped in an oversized copper-colored satin bow. But as she climbed the stairs to the entrance to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, her bow was released to reveal the rest of the swanky ensemble: an aged copper long skirt that paid homage to the patina of the Statue of Liberty.

“I patinated,” Lively LaLa Anthony said during a Vogue live broadcast. “This dress is an homage to New York and many classic iconic buildings.” She showed off some subtle references to the dress: “It’s the details of the Empire State Building, some of the Statue of Liberty drapes… (and) the Grand Central constellation.”

Tiaras proved to be the accessory of the night, and Lively was one of many to wear the accessory. She wore an elegant seven-studded ribbon, another nod to Lady Liberty. Symbolizing the seven continents, the actor explained that they represent “inclusion, hospitality and freedom.” She also asked jewelry designer Lorraine Schwartz to use 25 stones for 25 iconic statue windows.

“Who will actually count the stones?” she asked Schwartz. “I, I am a Virgo,” she replied with a laugh.

“It was especially nerve-wracking to be one of the hosts this year,” she told Anthony. “I thought a neat take on the subject would be looking at the city I love so much and the architecture, not just fashion.”
